There was a time when handwritten posters affixed to a village tree and displayed in the post office window were the most successful ways of advertising a concert, colour printing and design were very expensive and only for the very big choirs.
Now with free design tools like Canva and others, it is possible to make beautiful posters in a few minutes, share them digitally, and hey presto, the world knows about your concert.!
There was probably also a time when recruitment into choirs was just as easy, alas, with so many demands on people's time, that is no longer true.
In the case of Male Voice choirs especially, there was a time when pit workers gathered together in the Methodist chapel to sing on a Sunday, unsure of whether they would be alive the following week, such were the dangers of the work they carried out - from there started and spread the Male Voice choir movement, (indeed even Leeds male voice choir started as a colliery choir.)

Continually, we must be looking for new ways to recruit, and also to question the merits of Saturday evening 7.30 concerts ( up against Strictly, or Dancing on Ice,, or The Voice! ) and we must relook at ways of making singing events for those whose work prevents them from attending weekly rehearsals.
The Project choirs, Singing days are subjects covered in our new mini guide, and for the first time, the ethos behind and the workings of the Hugely successful Find your voice scheme that I have run in conjunction with Leeds Male voice choir for 9 years, which has introduced over 400 men to the world of singing and led many of them into a choral world they never knew existed.
As with all my mini guides and books, the contents are not 'airy fairy' they are all proven to work as the wonderful Robert Elliot, who reviewed the book, had to say -
I have known Tim for over 20 years - albeit at brief intervals- and his drive and creativity never cease to amaze me. The 'find your voice’ scheme is another one of Tim‘s brilliant initiatives which has given much proven success to choirs up and down the country. As with everything Tim does, there is meticulous detail in the planning and the delivery. If you follow his direction to the letter, it will, without question, provide success for you."
I think that this new mini guide will be a valuable addition to your library and may stimulate many ideas of your own. As the title says, the times are changing, and so must we, challenging long-held ideas that once worked wonderfully but need a fresh look
Happy music-making
Tim
