About the event

Join us in the historic Channing Hall in the centre of Sheffield for an uplifting day singing Baroque music from the masters including Vivaldi's Gloria, Bach, Handel, Telemann and other classic choral pieces. Our sing days are relaxed and informal in nature and we receive excellent feedback from participants (the cover picture is from our most recent sing day in Horsforth). However, they do require some work! As such, some sight-reading ability and experience of choral singing is an advantage to get the best out of the day. We will provide copies of the music for use on the day as part of your ticket price (obviously if you prefer to bring your own copies please feel free to do so). Tim loves all music, but baroque is one of his favourites so you are are assured that he will be imparting his considerable knowledge about the composers and music and also vocal hints to suit the style of the music. Here is a list of music we will be looking at:

  • Dietrich Buxtehude - Cantate Domino (in full)
  • Maurice Greene  - Lord, let me know mine end (in full)
  • William Croft - Burial Sentences (excerpts)
  • George Frederick Handel - From the East unto the West (Solomon) (in full) / Since by man (Messiah) (in full)
  • Antonio Vivaldi - Gloria (excerpts)
  • George Philip Telemann - Laudate Jehovam (excerpt)
  • Johann Sebastian Bach - Awake us Lord, and hasten (in full) / Rest here in peace (excerpts) / Round me falls the night (in full)

There will be recordings of most of these available on YouTube. For note learning, John Fletcher's rehearsal website is very useful and many of these pieces will be on it (there may be a small subscription charge): https://johnfletchermusic.org/

Sheffield has a fantastic transport system with not only trains, but buses and trams which extend far out of the City so you don't necessarily have to drive into the City, but park somewhere out of town (at Meadow Hall for instance) and get the tram in. Here are details of some parking options nearer the venue from the Channing Hall's website:
